email copywriting
I’m a freelance copwriter among other things and I want to know how do I get the initial meeting?

I’m 25 and in between working part time doing fall cleanup/snow shoveling, and copywriting all to pay for my expenses (rent, books, food) while I go to grad school. These are my “working” years so I do whatever job will pay the bills, of course legal. I really enjoy writing copy because it allows me to be creative. I haven’t been able to get the initial appointment with those potential clients. I email and cold call, but really to no avail. At this time of year are there potential clients who would be more apt to use my service? How do I get their business, or at least an appointment.

1. Put together a portfolio of the different kinds of copy you can write (or have written).
2. Send out a direct mailing to potential clients.
3. Talk to neighborhood businesses that can use ad copy.
4. Talk to neighborhood charities and non-profits that can use ad copy.
5. Talk to community newspapers that can use ad copy.
6. Offer introductory discounts (1st ad free, 2nd copy 50% discount, etc.) to new clients.
7. Through such discount offers, put together an updated profile of ads that you will have had actually published.
8. Repeat.
